potential camping grounds in the san diego county mountains

This mapping project uses advanced raster image processing, map algebra, and cost adjustments for site suitability.

Map A1 depicts the relief and contour of our study area, the San Diego Mountains. After reclassifying both the elevation and slope raters, we are left with two rasters with scores ranging from 0 to 5. After performing raster calculations and a two mile buffer analysis of the major roads in the area, we were able to produce suitable campgrounds that have a score ranging from 8 to 10. These campgrounds, depicted in map A2, are within two miles of a road and only consist of coniferous, oak woodland, and mixed forest vegetation cover as per the zoning guidelines.

Some other potential factors to consider when further readjusting the guidelines for camping grounds include proximity to cities, trails, and climbing areas. Trails and climbing areas can be placed into a sub-group for overall attractions. These are just a few of the most common activities camp attendees may participate in. In addition proximity to a city with a grocery store/outlet mall and gas stations are something camp attendees may consider when choosing their ideal camp site. Click on each map to expand.
