Redesigning the Redlands Mall in Downtown Redlands, California

The purpose of this project is to redesign and resolve an issue that the city of Redlands has with one of its currently abandoned city structures, the Redlands Mall. Redlands is known for being the birthplace of ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute) and the Mecca for GIS professionals. Redlands also happens to be my hometown. I am quite fond of the area and know it very well. One of the biggest hiccups and now massive eye sores is the Redlands Mall. The mall was built in 1977 and initially had a lot of promise. Sadly after many of the popular stores started being replaced by independent tenants the mall’s revenue plummeted and they closed the doors to the public on September 30, 2010. The Redlands Mall dissects downtown State Street in half. There is a lot of opportunity to create efficiency in the city center by bulldozing the mall down and extending State Street; creating more space for companies to open store fronts and having efficient flow of traffic from the either side of the mall.
